Bug Hunt

No one is more grateful for some of the new items in We Rule than I. I advocated for winter items, diamond groves and sapphire groves and ngmoco:) delivered. As players level up they can build their kingdoms around the Mediterranean, Mardis Gras and even Mechanical wonders.

Admittedly, the new mechanical wonders may be perplexing players. We could see the mythological, Egyptian and even far eastern elements with a little bit of rationalization. After all, commerce and mythology were important elements of medieval civilization and no university student could be considered educated without a through grounding in the classics.

We could even embrace Santa Claus and Mardi Gras. After all St. Nick has roots in customs dating back to the third century and Carnival was the church’s attempt to accommodate the Roman practice of Lupercalia while letting Christians blow off steam before getting down to the serious business of lent.

But machines? I felt as though I had stepped from the pages of Le Morte d’Arthur and into one of Michael Moorcock’s multiverse novels. (It doesn’t matter which one, he’s written hundreds.)

Surely we could have stayed closer to home. How about a Da Vinci helicopter? Or an alchemist’s studio with beakers and green smoke? If developers insisted on mechanical devices, why not take their clues from the Inquisition? They came up with racks, iron maidens and any number of devices which later inspired the Bush administration to reinterpret the Constitution.

The cog quest

The cog quest may be the most bizarre launched so far. To finished the quest, players have to successfully place orders at the brand new steam ship, flying machine and inventor’s studio. Since the studio requires L45 and 7o0000c and the flying machine requires L37, there aren’t going to be many out there. In fact I looked in more than a L37+ dozen kingdoms and only found quest shops in mine and Carol’s.

ngmoco:) seems to have figured this out because you don’t need to finish the quest to get the steam-clock reward.

Which leaves the question, why bother with the quest? By the time players have their shops installed, ngmoco:) will probably discontinue the steam-clock anyway.

Number 1 player request: More bugs fixed, fewer new shops

I find myself agreeing more and more with players like glitchcity: Less stuff, more bug fixes.

Partially I say this because I would like to get a little of my life back. It took me forever to process Thursday’s three new shops to crunch the numbers. Usually I install a shop, use mojo to vacate two or three orders and then place a sample order with a dummy kingdom.

Thursday people were placing orders faster than I could clear them out. After spending about a hundred mojo to clear out shops in a futile attempt to place an order, I finally had to reject several just to get in to order from the new shops. Then I had to use mojo to build two of them and mojo to process the orders.

When I say more bug fixes, I don’t want ngmoco:) to get too hasty. They’ve spent a lot of effort (and, by some accounts, still are) trying to prevent stacking which many players still see as a cool feature. I think players are doing fun and creative (as well as admittedly unsightly) things with stacking and no longer even consider it a bug.

So maybe I should say, less stuff, less attention to stopping stacking and more attention to the bugs that make it difficult to play the game.

I would say the number one player complaint remains a bug that has plagued players from the beginning. We Rule likes to crash. Some evenings it crashes six or seven times (not counting the “can’t connect to server” messages) in the course of ten or fifteen minutes.

With iOS 4, dealing with excessive crashes is more complex. You have to shut down all of your running apps (double click on the home button, hold your finger on the app until the “x” appears) and do a hard reboot (hold power and home button at same time until the apple appears). If that doesn’t work, you may need to delete and reinstall the game.

Since the game crashes for players with different frequencies I suspect there are a couple of places to look. The first is the server. Crashes tend to happen more often in the evening (at least for me), which is when I suspect more players are logging on.

But I also think the game has some serious memory leaks. I suspect this because two or three times a week I will touch an item to harvest and suddenly another game app opens (usually another ngmoco:) game app).1 In addition, if I put my iPad down with We Rule running in order to run to the bathroom or flip through the channels, it shuts down.

Carol reports entirely different problems, so I have to suspect the game bugs react differently with different apps running in the background. This also tends to indicate there may be some problems addressing memory.

Let’s start a bug hunt

I know there have been a number of comments about bugs, but I honestly don’t have the time to review the hundreds posted (and keep up with the charts and my life). So please submit the most irritating bugs and crashes in the comments over the next week and I will compile them for ngmoco:).

1Notice how their company name (ngmoco:)) screws up the whole open and close parentheses thing? suddenly the smiley face turns into a double chin. Maybe they should have done more focus testing. back

The machines are clearly a head-nod to “Steampunk” – a Victorian era with anachronistic technology…The movement has a big following within the Renn Fest crowd and among Medieval fans generally…The funky eyeglasses and steam-based machines (not to mention their reference to Steampunkin’) is a dead give-away…Think “Wild Wild West” ala a few years ago with Will Smith for a movie reference…Steampunk Literature is more obscure…but post Moorcock.

Anyway, Steampunk, to me at least, makes WAY more sense in WR than East Asia and Egypt…and might even inspire some folks to do some inquiring on their own as to the reference to learn more….I knew nothing of it until a year or so ago, when I finally asked a Renn Fest goer what was up with all the odd hats and glasses…and I got an earful about the whole genre of anachronistic sci-fi set in Med. England.

Seems to me that all three “we games” are affected the same in that when i try to switch realms, or from a farm, to a city, or kingdom, or any variation of switching from one to another, it will show me the realm/kingdom nearly instantly but if i touch the screen right away, it freezes and goes to my home screen and i then have to relaunch the app, “it blows goats”, sometimes I get a glimpse of my kingdom after switching to my farm and then it flips back, “totally weird”, and then to be kicked back to the main screen I mean it’s frustrating as hell and admittedly I sometimes get overly animated about it, and i feel like throwing my phone :(.
I will say that these “we games are alot of fun when your not getting the boot:)

I have multiples of all the items to complete the latest quest. Inventors & steamships are in the main realm, ships are in the east. Ships are open now, lots of competition for the others, so keep checking in.

And, it’s a giant PITA to play these days. I have to log in to the game on average 6 – 8 times to complete the morning harvest. (Usually the largest of the day) That doesn’t count logging in and out to get to both my kingdoms.

Right now, it’s mushroom time, and it kicked me out 5 times in a row before I could make the harvest. That has unfortunately become pretty typical.

I wonder if some of the issue is that people don’t actually log out, or close all the way, the game between harvests, so that there are so many people who have the game running inactively in the background. I know I do it – in fact, I’m usually logged in from both my ipad & my iphone at the same time, so I can grab whichever one is closer to me when the mushroom alarm goes off.

I wish that IF that was the issue, they could automatically log people out after a certain period of inactivity, or that it would not background the app if it’s going to cause so much instability.

yeah thats another one.. when i try to harvest itll freeze on screen, but as i continue to harvest anyway it sometimes catches up, and harvests those ive already selected, usually i get the boot though 😦

Before I started stacking, the game was perfect. I recently stacked my groves and I get repeated crashes. Maybe its ngmoco:) s way of deterring us from stacking? I’m not exactly sure.

The app quits on me at least 4 out of 5 times. Sometimes it drives me nuts. Since they listen to you Mr. Totalthinker could you recommend that Ngmoco should reduce all the bugs.

Oke, here we go.. I’m from the Netherlands and I reinstall We Rule every week. Every update, new content I have to reinstall. That news thing always hovers over the screen on my iPhone 3gs, can’t hear sounds anymore, don’t see friends and I think oke, it’s that time again. Delete/Reinstall.
Since it’s a free game I really didn’t care so much, lots of iPhone games are buggy but after I seen your blog and the amount of time you put into it you are right, I bought some mojo, got the 1 euro 59 glass sculpture and more for actual money like i seen many of my neighbors do they need to fix the bugs first.
I came here for slacking, sorry stacking cause I am a fan. Only on We Rule because I truly admire the artists behind it.

Something else – when you tap on a business that currently has an order on the iPad, the box comes up saying {“Building Something” for…} but you cannot see the user name of the person you are building something for, like you can from the iPhone, which has a screen 1/4 the size. I’d really like to see that fixed. It’s a pain to have to be logged in on both devices just to see which orders I might like to advance or a user I may want to add.

    Mar 16, 2011 @ 15:39:00

My daughter’s mojo went missing, and then when she leveled up, she wasn’t accruing any. Ngmoco made good. I had to estimate how much she had left.

I looked through my records and noted I bought her a bottle of 75 mojo and bought her some buildings when they were going to get rid of the theater, butterfly garden and such and did a rough calculation of how much she should have had left and how many levels she hasn’t accrued any mojo from the bug.

I gave them an estimate and they gave her mojo on the high side of my estimate. At least they made good on their bug.

I’ll have to monitor when my daughter levels up again to see if mojo accrues or if the bug is still there.

    Mar 16, 2011 @ 20:24:34

i agree with you, ngmoco should work on the bugs. I cant see other people’s usernames and sometimes I cannot see if a building is open or not. Maybe these bugs will be fixed in a new version.
im currently doing the clock quest and it has been difficult for me to find all the buildings

  10. JDTagish
    Mar 16, 2011 @ 21:19:12

If we’re putting in requests, I’d really like 180 degree rotation for buildings. Some things should be able to face each other, like the falconry. It’s aesthetic and not really a bug, but I wanted to throw that in there as well.

Once again I have lost a whole crop because the game needed to be updated and I had to get my computer out to download the update. It wouldn’t download completely to the ipad and it took too long for the whole process. I hate that!!! Don’t you hate that?

It seems certain people always cause a crash. I wonder if it crashes when someone is moving things in their realm and you click on their realm….

I would like to see them allow you to select all plots in order to plant one crop for all plots at once if you choose.
Even with all these issues, I’m hopelessly addicted. Thanks for blogging thinker. katsandthem

I wish you could set your friends up in the order you like. I have friends in different games that don’t belong there because they don’t play some of the games but I can’t get rid of them because I want them in WeRule. Just sayin’

  14. Moontown
    Mar 17, 2011 @ 00:50:27

My biggest complaint is not having a “do you want to spend” button when the spend mojo screen comes up. They do it for selling or moving an item. I cant count the times that I accidently spent mojo while moving my screen around, especially when im zoomed in. It has even used mojo without that screen popping up. 3 here 4 there, it adds up. I know I have lost crops because I cant log in, but its just a game and it was free money, not counting time invested. But when I spend money for mojo and its wasted because of thier game issues, that burns!

  15. Moontown
    Mar 17, 2011 @ 01:27:53

I have found that if I am doing alot of designing and stacking, that if I log out when I am finished, I have fewer freeze ups.

  16. slazzier
    Mar 17, 2011 @ 03:40:20

Heres one, after stacking awhile, I no longer see which building rents are ready to be collected, or if i’m in another’s kingdom, I cant see the buildings that are open, i must log out and relaunch the app to lose the glitch

    • confuzed1
      Mar 18, 2011 @ 17:02:43

You don’t have to log out. Just force-quit the app, and relaunch.

I wouldn’t request for any improvements regarding stacking, because stacking itself is considered to be a bug, and if it is found to cause other bugs, I fear the will make it a priority to eliminate it from the game entirely.

  17. slazzier
    Mar 17, 2011 @ 03:47:09

Hey JD, imagine a “collect all available rents” button, or even as Kat said, a way to plant/harvest all gardens with identical crops at once

    • JDTagish
      Mar 17, 2011 @ 16:48:20

Yeah, that would be cool. I’d be happy with just one for crops tho, to prevent the dreaded garlic or worse 3 day, 12 mojo, birds of paradise from a mis-tap when planting! I’d love to be able to have the option to plant all of the same crop at once!

I have the same issue with stacking. It automatically stops you from being able to see anything over the buildings. But, I’d rather have to log out and back in again, rather than lose the ability to stack, so it’s ok with me…LOL!

And, while we are on the subject Phillip, how about an “edit” button for the comments on the blog? I’d much rather be able to edit a comment when I remember something else I wanted to add to something I already said rather than having to post an entirely new comment just to add a sentence. Is that possible?

Here’s the example of a though that came into my head just after hitting the “post comment” button…

Is the “special surprise” the Gone Fishing sign? I don’t think people “get” what it’s supposed to be for, and they are showing up all over now… Or was it something else? I haven’t been able to figure that one out for certain.

My recollection is that it was theoretically supposed to be something you put in your main realm to indicate that you are on “vacation” from the game, but will be returning, so as to indicate to people that you are not quitting, but will not be fulfilling orders for a short period of time. I guess not everyone “read” that memo, huh? 😉

  21. davidmorris
    Mar 17, 2011 @ 20:55:31

I agree about the Gone Fishin’ sign. I just had the idea that I would buy 9 of them, one for each (potential) realm, just in case they went away at some point in the future. Interestingly, the most we are allowed to buy IS 9, so I think clearly that is the idea behind them.

I too have the problem where, if I’m doing a lot of redesigning, I lose the ability to see any info over buildings, including what is ready to harvest (though clicking on a ready building or crop will in fact harvest them.)

So, the “special surprises” are little speech bubbles that, if we click on them, give us a gift of some sort? This is according to the new splash screen anyway. Has anyone actually seen these surprise bubbles? Where do they appear? is it random? I’m guessing it would be in lieu of a harvest on a building (since they are the same speech bubbles that normally have gold to indicate a building ready for harvest) but I haven’t seen any yet.

Excellent website btw 🙂 Thank you!

I never had much problem until this new update.

Now it’s a bloody nightmare crashes 5 times before it loads then crashes between every realm. Everything is super slow to harvest open signs don’t work above shops it’s a pain!

Also stopped getting mojo for games downloaded and have been charged twice for a number of buildings on a few occasions.

Have deleted re installed twice turned iPad off an on all did nothing.

New content also takes ages to download an crashes while doing it. Its no wonder they gave us a gone fishing sign. As I’m close to needing a long break until it’s playable again.

Bring back the old version and take away the stupid prize cart!

      Mar 18, 2011 @ 16:27:19

I’m not crazy about the prize cart either, but I have not had any of the issue you have had with this update. I’ve actually crashed way LESS and can navigate through realms faster and with fewer problems than before. I’m sorry you’re having trouble!

Ihave a very annoying bug. I was going to move my birthday dragon to a different realm and now it is stuck in my inventory. Also, my two floats no longer earn coins or experience. Any guesses for me? I have tried everything possible to fix it, including deleting the game from my iPad and reinstalling it. Thanks. Susan

    • JDTagish
      Mar 21, 2011 @ 08:06:02

      Hi Susan –

The issue with the floats is going on with everyone & there is no fix at the moment. We’ll just have to wait for an update to fix the problem. I moved mine into inventory until the next update, which is likely to be tomorrow (Monday) based on their history.

As for the dragon statue, you can put a free one in every realm, so you don’t need to worry about moving it from one realm to another, but you can only have 1 per realm max, for a max total of 9.

  31. Fed Up
    Mar 21, 2011 @ 00:22:26

Ok, strong language here, but I’ve had enough.

    1. Boost gift with mojo and open CRASH! Log back and gift from that person has vanished, boost is wasted and mojo has been deducted. This has happened to me over 10 times now. Frustrating. Each time this happens, since there is no reparation, it’s like they are stealing from me since I give them money and get nothing for it.
    2. The two floats no longer pay out
    3. used mojo without meaning to, countless countless countless countless times. This ngcomo omission is a bug, not a request, since they’ve had a year to answer everyones pleas for it. Again, I pay money for something and get crap; I feel they are simply continually stealing from me since there is no reparation for this blatant oversight. Instead of mimicing every other “are you sure you want to do this” confirmation, they decide to spend time making the game more complex and therefore more crash-prone.
    4. WeRule crashes at least once every minute now, if not more, instead of once every five minutes – even after rebooting the iPad. This may appear to be an exaggeration, but sadly it is not. It has become a nightmare to play and I will now leave indefinitely until I see in their update list they have decided to actually spend time stabilizing the game rather than to continue compounding the crashing issues by sticking even more bad, memory-leaking, server-disconnecting, crash-prone code into the game.

My next step is to submit a formal complaint to Apple, and ask them to research the many other obvious user complaints, for accepting and allowing a broken app that takes users money in their store. Since Apple is accepting the money on ngcomo’s behalf and taking a percentage for themselves, they are culpable. The normal course for Apple is to pull the game until the developer can prove the issues have been fixed.

If this game were completely free, I would simply delete it and abandon its use. But due to ngcomo’s continued negligence, I have lost patience and money and clearly others have as well. They are no longer causing frustration for their users, they are committing a crime.

    Mar 21, 2011 @ 02:12:22

Although this new update still allows stacking, they have definitely made it harder. Supergroves are going to become a thing of the past unless you really know what you are doing. What I mean is, unless you are stacking a straight line of groves, consecutive lines stacked on top of each other (supergroves) are hidden underneath the previous line and you can no longer see the “sliver” of the grove you just placed (see youtube video). I’ve figured out how to deal with it, but rookie stackers are going to have a lot of trouble coping with the change. That will only fuel the “stop the stacker cheating” arguments.

I had great luck in the game over the weekend. I didn’t get kicked out too much and was able to go through all realms and lots of kingdoms to order without crashing. Sadly with the “update” this morning I can now collect on floats, but have crashed 11 times in a row attempting to log in.

  35. Kim
    Mar 21, 2011 @ 22:49:07

This app crashes about once a minute. I wish that was an exaggeration. It actually did crash once per minute before.

I emailed ngmoco:) and the guy, Joe, got back to me super quickly, suggesting it was a problem with my iPad, not with his game. As politely as I could muster, considering the money I’ve spent on this game, I said, no, I have reinstalled the game, turned my iPad on and off, etc, all to no avail. I have not heard back. I indicated in my email that I knew that other people were having similar problems based on my online reading.

The lion and jester floats appear to be in good working order now, but I think ngmoco:) should pay up for the hours the floats spent without being able to pay up.

Finally, does anyone here have a free Den of Thieves I can order from? I know quests are supposed to be just that, quests, but I can’t go questing if this app keeps crashing, and on the ten pages of We Rule friends I have, I only found one who had a Den of Thieves, and he didn’t deliver for my clover quest. My username is kittymack. I would super appreciate it, and would return the favor.

    Thanks :).

    Mar 23, 2011 @ 02:05:26

Hi, username Kittymack here. We Rule crashes constantly; it’s not even fun to play the game right now, it crashes so much. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled, turned my iPad on and off, all to no avail. I emailed ngmoco:) (smiley SO undeserved), and they got back to me right away when they wanted me to believe it was my iPad that was the problem. I emailed them back, told them I’d tried their lame fixes, and that I knew I wasn’t the only one with a problem. I haven’t heard from them since (and I was polite in my email! What the frak!) Anyway, just wanted to let you know, since you’re on a bug hunt.

I would rather ngmoco:) focus on fixing bugs than in putting out new content, although I was thrilled with the return of limited time content this week; I went a little unicorn meadow crazy in my East realm.

Finally, gold content: We Rule sent me a gold falconry, but I saw that Zimidar has a golden grove, and I really, really want one. SO SHINY!! I’m hoping they make the gold content more available; the gold falconry I received in gifts (after I boosted like whoa, mind you) is lovely, but it would be nice if they sent me another shiny gold object, especially considering how much I boost.

I have to say I only play on my Iphone and dont have many crash issues. But this weekend I played on an I pad and I was amazed at the dozens of crashes I had in a half hour. I totaly feel your pain now. I did complain to we rule about the mojo and they replaced my mojo and more. Its a good thing I love the game. My other complaint would be that when I log in, I will be part way thru harvesting crops and it will pop up with new content and I have to restart. I have lost crops because it took too long to reboot. The need to be consistant at when the new content is going to hit so we can plan crops accordingly.
